Introduction
Phagocytosis is the mechanism by which a cell uses its plasma membrane to engulf a large particle (0.5 m), resulting in the formation of an internal compartment known as the phagosome. Endocytosis is one form of endocytosis. A phagocyte is a cell that conducts phagocytosis. Phagocytosis is a key process in a multicellular organism's immune system for removing pathogens and cell debris. It includes macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells, monocytes, and eosinophils.
The steps involved in phagocytosis are:
- Chemotaxis - movement in response to chemical stimulus - pseudopods shift toward infected microorganisms.
- Adhesion: Attachment to a microbe is referred to as adhesion.
- Ingestion: During this, the pathogen is engulfed by the pseudopodia and put in a vesicle (phagosome) containing lysozyme.
- Digestion: phagosome maturation occurs and lysozymes combine to form phagolysosome - microbes are normally killed at this stage.
- Exocytosis: It is the process by which phagocytes remove any residual microbes.
