5.

Which of the following is NOT true of formins and Arp2/3 nucleators?

Group of answer choices
A. They are involved actin filament assembly
B. They are the rate-limiting step of actin polymerization
C. They are both actin-nucleating proteins
D. They both assemble long actin filaments
E. They are both controlled by signal transduction pathways
Expert Solution
Step 1

Assembly and disassembly of these filaments contribute to many types of cellular movements. Many proteins regulate actin assembly, but Arp2/3 complex and formins are the focus review because more is known about them than other proteins that stimulate the formation of new filaments.

This complex is active at the leading edge of motile cells, where it produces branches on the sides of existing filaments. Growth of these filaments produces force to protrude the membrane.

Arp2/3 complex and formins are the only known plant actin nucleators. These cellular nucleators of actin assembly overcome these kinetic barriers by a different mechanism. Formins stblize actin the polymerization intermediate.

Formins nucleate and support the elongation of unbranched actin filaments for the cytokinesis and other various types of actin filament bundles.
