Dichromate is the anionic form of potassium dichromate from which both the proton are removed. The reagent has the ability to oxidize alcohols into carbonyl compound. 

Primary alcohols produces aldehyde, which can further be converted to carboxylic acid under specific reaction conditions.

Secondary alcohols forms ketone when allowed to react with dichromate.

Tertiary alcohols do not give any oxidation reaction with dichromate as it lacks the hydrogen atom and carbon-oxygen double bond cannot take place.
