Which gland in the endocrine system is affected when a patient suffers from diabetes? What is the function of the following hormones: insulin and glucagon? Does Mary have a valid concern about the pump? Do you agree that she will be perceived as different? Why or why not
After reading Chapter 12, “The Cardiovascular System,” from Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology, analyze the following case and answer the questions below.
Mary, who is a 15-year-old student, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was nine (9) years old. Up to now she has managed to take care of herself with the guidance of a healthcare team and her parents. She is very disciplined, a straight-A student, and never misses a doctor’s appointment or an insulin injection.
However, she has always been very discreet about it and never applies an injection in front of others. She feels comfortable that way.
This school year, Mary joined a running club and had been so busy that she missed some meals and experienced several episodes of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). During her recent doctor’s visit, the doctor suggested an insulin pump, for Mary is responsible and a pump will allow better insulin management when exercising. Mary is reluctant because she finds having an implantable medical device that is visible to others shameful; she fears others will perceive her as different and sick.
