Calcium plays a vital role in muscle contraction. It interacts with protein actin and myosin. The Ca⁺² ions bind with a protein filament called actin filament. It results in exposure of the region to which the myosin head binds. During the process of muscle contraction, the displacement of the troponin and subsequent power stroke of myosin filaments require a high level of intracellular Ca⁺² ion concentration. It helps in the process of muscle contraction by binding with the Troponin C and further helps the myosin head to get attached and tighten onto the actin filament.
