When altering fundamental frequency why do we change the stiffness and thickness of the vocal folds?
Vocal cords are also known as vocal folds that are folds of tissue in the throat to generate sounds through the act of vocalization. The size of vocal cords affects the pitch of voice. The folds are controlled via the recurrent laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve. There occurs variation in voice pitch in case of both male and female. Since birth, boys develop larger vocal cords than girls. While during the puberty, testosterone hormone tends to enlarge the larynx. The vocal cords also lengthen and thickens as we age, generating a deeper resonance and different sort of vibration compared to the time seen in childhood. Male voices lower and deepen at puberty, while female voices remain relatively high.
