Each of the body systems works in collaboration with other systems. Nervous system helps to carry nerve impulses to all parts of the body, thus virtually controls all activities of the body. The central nervous system (CNS) communicates with the different parts of the body by means of cranial and spinal nerves. All the nerves that arise at CNS, together with aggregations of cell bodies located outside the CNS, constitute the peripheral nervous system (PNS). PNS is subdivided into afferent division which includes nerves that carries information from tissues and organs to the CNS and efferent division includes efferent nerves which transmit instructions from the CNS to target cells or tissues like the muscles or glands that carry out the orders to bring about the desired effect. Major muscles in the body, for example facial muscles, lips, cleft palate, teeth, tongue, etc. are regulated by somatic nervous system.
