The 1788 Slave Trade Act, also known as Dolben Act was in which it placed limitation on the number of enslaved Africans that British slave ships could transport. This was the first British legislation passed to regulate slave shipping. The act was proposed by abolitionist Sir William Dolben to restrict the slave trade as slave had an adverse effect on children. This act sparked an important debate on the benefits of breeding slaves rather than buying them.
