Philip II was the ruler of Macedonia from 359 BC - 336 BC. He was the father of Alexander the Great. He was the third son of Amyntas III. He was recognized for his efforts to raise Macedon and his conquest of Greece which he achieved by his reformation of the Macedonian army. In 338 BC, he defeated Athens and Thebes at the Battle of Chaeronea. He established the federation of Greece (League of Corinth), which made him the leader and commander in chief during the Achaemenid Empire invasion. He was assassinated by his bodyguard in 336 BC.
