What was Hamer’s involvement with the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP)?
Fannie Lou Townsend Hammer was a women's rights activist and one of the leading personalities in the Civil Rights Movement. In the summer of 1964, she in collaboration with others organized a program in Mississippi aimed at registering African-Americans as voters. This program came to be known as the Mississippi Summer Project or Mississippi Freedom Summer. She also co-founded the National Women's Political Caucasus to help women politicians.
