Question

What product prepared for preparation of p-Nitroaniline.

Expert Solution
Step 1

In preparation of p-nitroaniline first p-nitroacetanilide is prepared from acetanilide by nitration for this acetanilide is treated with mixture of nitric acid and sulphuric acid then p-nitroacetanilide as major product and o-nitroacetanilide is also formed as a minor product.

Nitro anilines is directly nitration of aniline is not possible because amino group oxidized with nitrating mixture(nitric acid and sulphuric acid). To protect the amino group of aniline from oxidation, first acetanilide is nitrated and give p-nitroacetanilide after that on hydrolysis of p-nitroacetanilide give p-nitroaniline.

p-nitroaniline difficult to obtain by direct nitration of p-nitroacetanilide.
