Expert Solution
The Stanford Prison Experiment
In 1973, Philip Zimbardo conducted an extremely controversial experiment to investigate the power of perceived social roles in determining conformity to role behavior. He divided 21 college students into two groups called prisoners and guards, and simulated a prison environment in which they were to assume their roles for two weeks. The "prisoners" were made to undergo mandatory checks that contributed to the simulation and given prison clothes and chains to wear around their ankles. The "guards" were also given uniforms and batons but were instructed never to use physical violence.
The next section discusses how this experiment demonstrated conformity to social roles among both groups.
