Expert Solution
Step 1: Metacognition

The term 'Metacognition' is derived from the Greek word meta which means beyond, and 'cognition' which means thinking. In short, 'Metacognition' refers to the process of thinking about thinking. It is considered a higher-order process that allows people to think about what they are thinking and regulate their thinking. The process of meta-cognition is characterized by a deep awareness of the self's thought processes and appropriate application of knowledge. It is easily understood as a process of planning, and assessing self-understanding.

Metacognition has a wide array of definitions. However, research has subdivided meta-cognition into Metacognitive knowledge and Self-Regulation/Metacognitive regulation.

  1. Metacognitive Knowledge: refers to the awareness and knowledge one has about their own abilities, understanding of which strategies are to be used when, and the nature of tasks.
  2. Metacognitive Regulation: refers to the efficiency and speed at which an individual monitors and manipulates their own cognitive processes.

The model of meta-cognition (Nelson and Narens', 1990) suggests two levels of meta cognition, i.e., object level and meta-level. They describe the object level as the level where thinking happens. Whereas, the meta level is described as the level where one thinks about thinking.
