Expert Solution
Step 1

The blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets suspended in the plasma. Hematocrit is defined as the number of red blood cells present in the blood in comparison to the total blood volume. This value is important as it gives an insight into the amount of oxygen that is carried in the blood. Hematocrit is expressed as a percentage. For example, a hematocrit of 35% means there are 35 milliliters of red blood cells in 100 milliliters of blood. Hematocrit is measured as a part of the complete blood count (CBC). A lower or a higher hematocrit value is indicative of a medical condition. Lower hematocrit is indicative of anemia which can occur due to blood loss, leukemia, iron deficiency, kidney disease, etc. Higher hematocrit is indicative of polycythemia vera which can occur due to heart disease, dehydration, pulmonary fibrosis, sleep apnea, etc. Symptoms of anemia include shortness of breath, headache, dizziness, chest pain etc. Symptoms of polycythemia vera include blurred vision, headache, flushed skin, excessive sweating, itching, etc.
