He was born in Pisa, Italy. In his youth, Galileo became an accomplished Lutenist and quickly learned from his father his skepticism for the established authority. He was educated at Valombrosa Abbey in the south-east from 1575 to 1578. His favorite subject was logic. He is considered the father of modern science. His contributions to observational astronomy include telescopic confirmation of the phases of Venus, observations of the four largest satellites of Jupiter, observations of Saturn's rings, and analysis of sunspots.
