Gause gave this principle on the basis of interaction of population which means how organisms in a population interacts with each other in order to survive.
This is called interspecific interactions. This can have positive, negative or neutral effect.
Name of such interactions are MUTUALISM, COMPETITION, PREDATION, PARASITISM, COMMENSALISM, AMENSALISM and PROTOCOPERATION.
In mutulism and protocoperation both the organisms are benefitted.
In predation and parasitism one species is benefitted and the other is harmed.
In commensalism one is benefitted and the other species is neither benefitted nor harmed.
Ammensalism is the one in which one species is harmed and other is neither harmed nor benefitted.
Last is competition in which both the species is harmed.

Gause's competitive exclusion principle is based one such interaction that is COMPETITION.
