In the history of Christianity, the Counter-Reformation, also known as the Catholic Reformation or Catholic Revival, refers to Roman Catholic efforts aimed both against the Protestant Reformation and against internal renewal in the 16th and early 17th centuries. The Counter-Reformation happened at the same time as the Protestant Reformation, probably beginning just before Martin Luther's act of nailing the Ninety-five Theses to the door of Castle Church in 1517, according to some accounts. 

Early calls for change outgrew analysis of the common mentalities and approaches of the Renaissance popes and a large number of the church. New strict orders and different gatherings were established to impact a strict reestablishment—e.g., the Theatines, the Capuchins, the Ursulines, and particularly the Jesuits. Later in the century, St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Ávila advanced the change of the Carmelite request and impacted the improvement of the supernatural custom.
