Expert Solution
Introduction

In the West, majorly two approaches to inequality are used - the individual attributes approach and the structural approach. Income and opportunities are distributed across individuals, therefore, individual attributes give rise to inequality. That is, in advanced capitalist societies, inequality is majorly determined by economic status. Economic status is acquired through employment, so the individual attributes approach to inequality focuses on the different mechanisms by which people acquire educational, motivational, and cultural resources that have an impact on their career trajectory in the labor market.

The structural approach, on the other hand, concedes that individual attributes explain why a person might end up in a certain position on the socioeconomic ladder. However, individual attributes, alone, cannot determine the distribution of these positions. Inequality, therefore, is not merely the outcome of individual attributes and individual efforts. In fact, to a considerable extent, it depends on the underlying mechanisms through which jobs with different rewards are generated. This is dependent on the structure - that is the power dynamics between the capital, state, and labor. So, power structures, labor laws, bargaining power of unions, etc, all play a role in inequality.
