Fusion gene is a hybrid gene formed from two previously independent genes or ORFs (Open Reading Frame). It can occur as a result of translocation, interstitial deletion, or chromosomal inversion.
Fusions are of two types-
1. Transcriptional or operon fusion- expression of the reporter gene is dependent on the promoter of the target gene.
2. Translational or gene fusions- the reporter gene is fused in frame with the gene of interest.
Reporter genes are genes used by researchers that enable the detection or measurement of gene expression. They can be fused to regulatory sequences or genes of interest to report expression location or levels.
Expression is dependent on both transcription and translation of the target gene and results in the production of a hybrid protein.
