What are the insights of the “life course view” on gangs?
The fundamental idea behind the lifetime approach in Sociology is the acknowledgement that individuals, their identities, and actions are constrained and aided by many social factors. Factors like place (geography), time (history), agency, timing, stage in life span and other social connections help us better understand gangs and the role that the play in molding individuals.
In other words, becoming a gang member is not something one does when one is 60, it begins with being in a certain place at a certain time, belonging to a particular age group (stage in lifespan) by knowing somebody and desiring to experience agency in a certain way. All these aspects together influence initiation and membership into gangs. Criminology is a sub-discipline of sociology that explores gang membership from a life span perspective.
