Deception refers to the act of deceiving someone through one's actions or words. Deception can occur in various ways, lying is one form of deception.
In real life situations, more often than not, people fail to detect a deception, This is often attributed to the fact that individuals tend to base off their arguments regarding deception on the presence of basic non-verbal cues such as fidgeting, stammering, avoiding eye-contact, etc. Research has found that these non-verbal cues aren't a accurate method of detecting deception. These cues are highly subjective and may vary from individual to individual. Not every liar is bound to act nervously or fidget. Also, the detection of these cues depends on the subjective judgment of the individual who is trying to detect the deception. Sometime people tend to form an association between the cues and the personality of the individual which are affected by their own judgment of them.
