been asked to provide documentation of your calculations for
the safe display of this piece.
a. Determine the yield strength of the steel alloy used for the suspension cable, and write a brief
note for your non-engineer colleagues to help them understand what this property means, and
why this value should not be surpassed in this application.
b. Determine the appropriate working strength if a safety factor of 1.50 is applied to the yield
strength. Jot an annotation of what a safety factor is and why it’s important.
c. For aesthetic reasons, it is desired that this wire be as slender and unobtrusive as possible,
while still safely holding the mobile. With the calculated working strength in mind, calculate the
minimum cable diameter that would safely fulfill the job.
d. Using this diameter and assuming a cable length of 5.00 m, calculate the axial strain on the
cable. Make a short remark to help your coworkers understand what strain means.
e. Calculate the elongation of the cable when the mobile is affixed to it. Is this elongation an
example of elastic or plastic deformation, and how do you know?
