Thinking about Acid Mine Drainage: How much space do you usually need for natural attenuation to occur? What do you think the ideal residence time should be? What rates would you expect to see?

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental issue that results in the higher concentration of the heavy metals in the water streams. This results in the change of the chemical nature of the water from neutral to highly acidic. The drainage is evident from the surfaces of deep coal and metal mining regions. AMD results in the depleted oxygen levels and it increases weathering of minerals (heavy metals) in the water bodies. The water thus becomes unfit for the aquatic life and the animals inhabiting the adjacent areas.
