Expert Solution
Step 1

Inflammation can be defined as the response of tissues to an injury and involves a series of processes so as to limit the harm to the tissue. Inflammation takes place in two levels: acute inflammation and chronic inflammation.

Acute inflammation is an early response to tissue injury, which is characterized by five main clinical features: rubor (redness), tumor (swelling), calor (heat), dalor( pain) and loss of function. Instantly following an injury, there is vasoconstriction of blood vessels in order to minimize the loss of blood. This is followed by vasodilation and an increase in the vascular permeability due to the release of histamine by the resident mast cells.  Increase in the flow of blood and vascular permeability is responsible for rubor (redness) and calor (heat).
