The Importance of Children Vaccination In the late 1700s, Edward Jenner a practicing doctor in England inserted some fresh cowpox from a woman to a small boy as a medical experience. The boy never contracted smallpox which developed the idea of vaccination. Vaccination is among the greatest invention in the field of health. They have saved millions of lives for over 50 years. Before the development of measles vaccine, millions of Americans suffered from the disease per year and thousands were hospitalized (Kluger). Most vaccines administered to children are 90% to 99% effective in disease prevention. However, there is a challenge where some people doubt the efficiency of vaccines and thus do not take their children for vaccination. The main concern to parents is a myth that autism is caused by vaccines. Vaccines aid in preventing children from contracting deadly diseases and in containing diseases so that they don’t spread to others. When a child is born, their immune system is not fully developed. A healthy immune system is an essential part of being physically healthy especially for children. Vaccines reduces the possibility of your child risk of suffering from some diseases and slim the risk of a child ability to spread a disease that may not be diagnosed early to other children by enabling their body to be immune to most of the diseases. This essay will focus on why it’s important for parents to vaccinate their children. Parents aim at doing everything possible to raise healthy children and protect them from any health problem they can. Vaccination is a great way to achieve it. Lack of vaccination can sometimes causes disability for example when there is an outbreak of whooping cough, mumps and measles in the USA, the mostly affected are the group of children whose parented refused to get them vaccinated ( Childhood 1). This results to a child to suffer from pneumonia, brain inflammation, tender and swollen salivary glands, under the years and other body parts. According to research vaccines are very effective even though there is no medicine that is perfect, vaccines boost immunity. Even in the current situation, vaccines have shown to be effective in the prevention of spread of deadly diseases. The Covid-19 disease emerged in the end of 2019 in China and by March 2020, it had spread throughout the world. The spread was facilitated by the movement of people from one region to another. Since the virus had not been there before, there was no vaccine to prevent it. However, medics have worked at developing vaccines to prevent the spreading of the virus. Despite the availability of different attempts of treatment, it spread at a very high rate. The risks exposed to the most vulnerable groups in the society such as the elderly, children and the people with pre-existing medical conditions are astonishing. The vulnerable groups are at a higher risk of contracting the disease because they have weak immunity. Therefore, the elderly needed to be vaccinated but most children were not vaccinated as research showed that most children and the youth without any medical condition before were not contracting the disease at a high rate. To handle the pandemic, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health organizations recommended the administering of vaccines and other preventive measures such as the use of face masks and social distances to curb its spread (NCIRD). Everyone in the world saw the effects and threats of the virus and the benefits of mandatory vaccination as it helped the world to recover from the virus. However some people were against the vaccination with the argument that it infringes citizens’ right and individual liberties. Although the vaccine has being life-saving, it has become more challenging for health institution to continue with the vaccine production. The delayed outcomes of the vaccines increased the number of infections and deaths but also the anti-vaxxers had no better solution to the public exposing them to more threats. Vaccines saves lives, according to United Nation Foundation Organization, vaccines saves about 2.5 million children from preventable diseases per annum which is equal to 285 children saved every hour. The Centers of Disease Control estimates that childhood vaccination prevented about 419 million illnesses, 26.8 million hospitalization and 936,000 early children deaths between 1994 to 2018 ( pros & Cons). Despite the evolution that the health sector has experienced worldwide, it has become normal and people do not acknowledge the threats that their children are exposed to before they are vaccinated. A newborn lacks guards in their body against any disease and thus any close contact with an infected person makes them at a risk of contracting the disease. The baby’s body cannot fight the disease and can result to the baby succumbing to it. Before vaccine administration to a child it is tested and confirmed for the child’s wellbeing. Any concern about vaccine safety should not be an issue to medical professional ethics (Szabo, par. 6-10). The doctors, nurses and other health providers take an oath to serve the public with humanity. Their main goals is to improve patients’ health and prevent infections. Therefore the claim that vaccines are mainly motivated by profits is false and against the doctors ethics. It is important to understand that there exists a special category of children who should not be vaccinated because they are immune-suppressed. Such children are at a higher threat of contracting diseases from the people who have been vaccinated as they would have benefited from the vaccines but their parents rejected them. According to Gunlock, parents should ensure that their children are vaccinated to promote safety of the immune-suppressed individuals (Nemitz). Children interact with people from different environments such as schools, churches, playgrounds and many more. These exposes them to health risks to those that are not immunized as they are exposed to conditions such as genetic disorders and they must interact with their friends. To ensure that all the children in schools are safe regardless of their varying conditions, especially those that are related to health, all parents should actively seek prevention through vaccinations. Children become uncomfortable in response to vaccination but there are significant reasons why we should embrace child vaccination (Edubirdie). Vaccine hesitancy describe the individuals that are undecided about immunizations or who choose to refuse or postpone immunizations. There are several reasons why parents decide not to take their children for immunization. The most common is religious reasons, where parents follow some religious beliefs that prevent them from vaccination or worse still using the modern form of health care. Some go for traditional medicines or what their beliefs allow them to use (Thestar). However, even the people who follow religious beliefs that bar them from seeking modern medical help always seek for it when faced by worse situations or effects of not taking vaccines they seek for modern medical attention which maybe too late. Personal or philosophical reasons is common in making parents opt out of immunization. The third and the biggest reason most parents refuse to immunize their children is the concerns about the safety of the vaccines. I have extensively discussed this reason previously as it should not be an issue as it is thoroughly tested before it’s administered to human beings. In conclusion, although different beliefs or fears may make parents fail to take their children for immunization, it’s very significant. Vaccination has more benefits and have saved many lives. If you have any doubt on the significance of vaccination, be ready to learn as most people who are against vaccination lack enough knowledge and understanding of its impact on children’s health. However, if parents care about their children’s health and want them to be physically fit, they should vaccinate them. Even the covid-19 pandemic was solved by the development of vaccines which played a huge role in stabilizing the world. Vaccination helps in having a healthy generation and future generations.
