Expert Solution
Step 1

Water is photo-oxidized during the light reactions of photosynthesis in the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC), also referred to as the water-splitting complex. At the membrane-lumen interface, four photosystem II core protein subunits surround the OEC.

In the overall water oxidation reaction, two water molecules have four electrons taken out of them, resulting in the production of four protons and one O2 molecule. The molecular machinery for oxidising water needs to be able to store the oxidising potential resulting from three light-induced charge separations before the fourth provides enough oxidising power for water oxidation.
