According to the crystal field theory, in the presence of the octahedral ligand field, the five d-orbitals of the central metal atom are divided into two energy levels, lower energy level orbitals t2g (dxy, dyz, dzx) and higher energy level orbitals eg (dx2-y2, dz2). The difference in these energy levels is known as crystal field splitting energy and it depends on the strength of the ligand field.
