In railway engineering, gauge is defined as the spacing of the rails and is measured between
the inner faces of the load-bearing rails, as shown in Figure 1. Various gauges have been
adopted by different railway in the world due to historical, cost and other considerations.
Basically, gauges can broadly be divided into four types depending on the width of the gauge,
as shown in Figure 2.
