What is the Pax Priísta?
What is the Pax Priísta?
On October 2, 1968, the Mexican government approved the killing of about 300 student protesters at the Plaza de los Tres Culturas, the main square in the Mexican city of Tletelloco. Hundreds of arrests were made; Many dissidents were tortured and / or expelled. The tragedy, known as the Tlatelolco Massacre, lasted for several months, mainly peaceful protests, collectively referred to as the Mexican student movement of 1968. Student demands call for socio-economic reforms, democracy and great civil rights beyond academic concerns. The 1968 movement was unprecedented. Student coalitions provided the inevitable, firm impetus, and these protests were significant. However, a diverse group of non-students also spurred critical, broad-based support for the movement, participating in demonstrations or expressing subtle forms of solidarity with protesters. In fact, the events in Mexico bear a striking resemblance to the international trend. As civil disobedience and social unrest increased in Mexico, comparable, yet autonomous, student-led protests spread around the world, shaking the major socio-political establishment in many countries in 1968.
