During the 1890s, American politics was in transition. In 1893, the country was severely hit by an economic depression called the Panic of 1893. National Politics in the Gilded Age(1865-1896) was confusing and characterized by stalemate. The 1896 Presidental election changed national politics; it marked the start of a new era in American political history.
