Sacred Space or Sacred Time the
defining feature of Judaism?
As we turn to Judaism this week we have the
chance to deal with another aspect of religion--
the matter of sacredness. To be sure, when one
thinks of the importance of geography (i.e. Israel)
and architectural spaces (i.e. the synagogue)
have within Jewish tradition, it seems hard to
argue that sacred space is also the defining
element of this religion as well. That said, a good
case can also be made that sacred time is of
greater importance within the faith, given the
prominence of holy days and festivals within the
religion. With the above in mind, your aim this
week is to take a stand with respect to the
following question:
• What best defines Jewish Religion: Sacred
Time or Sacred Place?
To be sure, both are pivotal within the religion.
But I want to know which one is MORE pivotal,
based on your reading this week. To make your
case, you will need to present TW0 arguments in
favor of your position. Note as well, that you
have to take a side this week. Your answer may
not propose a both/and position.
In arranging your argument, please be sure to
first state your position and then use two
examples, in two distinct paragraphs to
support your two position.
