Be sure to cite AT LEAST two examples to support your claims. Classmates Hero: The eastern hero that I chose to evaluate and analyze was Da-Yu the great, also referred to as Yu. Da-Yu is a famous ancient Chinese archetype who was known for his contributions in altering water flow throughout nature. During a time of great flooding in the land, Da-Yu split mountains and forged river streams to help flooding. He used all of his talent and wisdom of mother nature to provide the land with new irrigation patterns. He is said to have controlled the Yellow River with gifts of wisdom he received from the gods. From his nature and stature became the “pace of Yu” which is said to be the way in which spirits gave him control over nature and other people. This is still a widely practiced custom. The story of Da-Yu the great differs in slight ways than that of the typical western hero. In western mythology the hero sets off as a strong, yet vulnerable individual. The hero finds themselves on some kind of path or journey with a rise and fall or journey. The story of Da-Yu doesn’t necessarily target these areas but instead show how the characteristics of Da-Yu that would be considered hindrances were considered gifts from the spirits. It shows direct explanations for the creation of nature and a god like presence of gift of Da-Yu. Though Da-Yu is considered a hero in archetypal perspectives, his influence in eastern mythology. Having spent time emerged in Chinese culture I do find a connection with Da-Yu. Legends and influences that have been passed verbally through time often have way of explaining natural occurrences in the world like that of Da-Yu who shaped the rivers and lands especially in times that came very much prior to any modern technology that would have aided in these occurrences. I think because I myself come from a culture of many verbal passed down myths that it is more accepting to hear and understand. I believe that what the story of Da-Yu can teach us is to move with nature and ourselves. It teaches us to be at peace with ourselves and nature and that when that balance is reached we can find ways to work alongside nature and the gifts it offers. Da-Yu can teach us patience, hard work, and eagerness to protect the lands, rivers, and resources.
