1930
Between 1910 and 1930, almost three million African Americans moved north towards large, industrial cities like
Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, and New York, abandoning their farms in pursuit of the American Dream. They moved
both to escape the racism of the South and in search of opportunity. Many felt that it would be easier to find
employment and a higher standard of living.
However, many arrived to find the cities overcrowded and that they were competing for the jobs with European
immigrants and whites. Although free from the Jim Crow Laws, for many their dreams of escaping racism and
poverty were not realized.
