Model 4: Absolute Configuration of Chiral Compounds
Chiral centers have two different forms, a right-handed (R) and left-handed (S) form which are mirror images
of each other but are not exactly alike. The Ror 5 assignment is called the absolute configuration of that
chiral center.
To determine the absolute configuration of a chiral center using a model:
1. Rank the four groups attached to the chiral center according to Cahn-Ingold-Prelog sequence rules.
Assign 1 to the highest priority and 4 to the lowest priority.
2. Orient the molecule or model so that the lowest ranking (4) points directly back, away from you.
3. Look at the three remaining substituents, which now appear to radiate towards you. If the curved
arrow drawn from the highest to second-highest to third-highest ranked substituent (10203) is
clockwise, we say that the chirality center has the R configuration. If an arrow from 10203 is counter
clockwise, the chirality center has the s configuration. To remember these assignments, think of a
car's steering wheel when making a Right (clockwise) turn.
