QUESTION 1 In 2003, Major League Baseball took steps to speed up the paly of baseball games and make games a more consistent duration. In a sample of 49 games in 2002, the average duration of a game was 2 hours and 58 minutes with a standard deviation of 32 minutes. A similar survey in 2003 of 62 games found that the average duration was 2 hours and 40 minutes with a standard deviation of 19 minutes. When testing the hypothesis (at the 5% level of significance) that the variance has been reduced, what is the test statistic? (please round your answer to 2 decimal places)

Expert Solution
Step 1

Let X1 be the random variable such that duration of baseball games of sample 1 obtained in 2002.

s1: Sample standard deviation of the duration of baseball games of sample 1. = 32

n1: Random sample size of duration of baseball games of sample 1= 49

Let X2 be the random variable such that duration of baseball games of sample 2  obtained in 2003.

S2: Sample standard deviation of that duration of baseball games of sample 2 = 19

n2: Random sample size of that duration of baseball games of sample 2 = 62

 As given, assuming the data is normally distributed.

It is required to test the hypothesis that the variance has been reduced.

Level of significance;

The given level of significance is  , α = 0.05.
