Schizophrenia is a brain illness which results in several abnormal behaviors, characteristics and experiences. The symptoms of schizophrenia are different for different individuals and have varying effects based on the part of the brain which is affected. Schizophrenia can be caused by a large number of factors such as genetic factors, psychological factors, metabolic, environmental factors as well as neurotransmitter systems and structural disorders of the brain.
A potential biological factor for schizophrenia can be genetics. Schizophrenia can be inherited through family genes. Various studies have found that the more closely one is related to an individual with schizophrenia, the higher their chances are of contracting the illness. A number of studies done on the twins have been very effective in finding a genetic predisposition to occurrence of schizophrenia. The studies done on monozygotic twin of an individual with schizophrenia concluded that the twin shares a 40%-50% risk of contracting the illness.
