Question

Propose a metal cathode for an electrochemical battery with an anode Tin (2+) using the standard electrode potential ruler and calculate the voltage of this proposed battery? Standard E of tin: -0,137V

Expert Solution
Step 1

Since at cathode reduction takes place and at anode oxidation.

Hence the reaction taking place at anode is

Sn -----> Sn2+ + 2 e-                        E0 = 0.137 V                         ( E0 is +ve as we are writing the oxidation reaction )

Step 2

Since the overall cell potential need to be positive for a battery to work.

Hence the metal at cathode should be such that it is having more reduction potential than tin.

Since the reduction potentials of metals like Copper (Cu), Silver (Ag), Gold (Au) etc are more than tin.

Hence any of it can be chosen.

choosing copper for our case as an example.

Hence the reaction taking place at cathode will be

Cu2+ + 2 e- ------> Cu                      E0 = 0.34 V
