Proponents of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)claim that certain eye movements are reliable indicatorsof lying. According to this notion, a person looking up totheir right suggests a lie whereas looking up to their left is indicative of truth telling. In 2012, British research-ers tested the claim that you can spot a lie by watching a person’s eyes. They recruited 50 male volunteers andrandomly assigned some of them to be trained in usingthe NLP technique. Then all participants watched 32 video clips that each showed two interviews, one includ-ing a true statement and the other a lie. After each clip, the participants identified the interviewee they thoughtwas lying. The 21 NLP-trained participants averaged16.33 correct decisions with a standard deviation of 3.53,compared to the 29 participants in the control group whoaveraged 16.59 correct with standard deviation 3.84.What type of test should be conducted to answer thequestion, “Do these data provide evidence that you canspot a lie by watching a person’s eyes?”A) One proportion z-testB) One sample t-testC) Matched pairs t-testD) Z-test for the difference of two proportionsE) Two sample t-test for the difference of two meansSource: Wiseman R, Watt C, ten Brinke L, Porter S,Couper S-L, et al. Proponents of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
claim that certain eye movements are reliable indicators
of lying. According to this notion, a person looking up to
their right suggests a lie whereas looking up to their left
is indicative of truth telling. In 2012, British research-
ers tested the claim that you can spot a lie by watching
a person’s eyes. They recruited 50 male volunteers and
randomly assigned some of them to be trained in using
the NLP technique. Then all participants watched 32
video clips that each showed two interviews, one includ-
ing a true statement and the other a lie. After each clip,
the participants identified the interviewee they thought
was lying. The 21 NLP-trained participants averaged
16.33 correct decisions with a standard deviation of 3.53,
compared to the 29 participants in the control group who
averaged 16.59 correct with standard deviation 3.84.
What type of test should be conducted to answer the
question, “Do these data provide evidence that you can
spot a lie by watching a person’s eyes?”
A) One proportion z-test
B) One sample t-testC) Matched pairs t-test
D) Z-test for the difference of two proportions
E) Two sample t-test for the difference of two means
