Problem 4: A weather balloon has an absolute-pressure sensor attached. On the ground the sensor reads PA = 1.01x10° Pa. At a height of h = 979 m, the sensor reads PR = 8.82×104 Pa. A Part (a) Assuming air is an incompressible fluid, enter an expression for an estimate of the density of air, in terms of the defined quantities and the acceleration due to gravity, g. Expression : Select from the variables below to write your expression. Note that all variables may not be required. B, Y, 0, b, d, g, h, j, k, m, n, P, PA, PB, S Part (b) Calculate the density of air, in kilograms per cubic meter, assuming it is an incompressible fluid. Numeric : A numeric value is expected and not an expression. 1. 307
Fluid Pressure
The term fluid pressure is coined as, the measurement of the force per unit area of a given surface of a closed container. It is a branch of physics that helps to study the properties of fluid under various conditions of force.
Gauge Pressure
Pressure is the physical force acting per unit area on a body; the applied force is perpendicular to the surface of the object per unit area. The air around us at sea level exerts a pressure (atmospheric pressure) of about 14.7 psi but this doesn’t seem to bother anyone as the bodily fluids are constantly pushing outwards with the same force but if one swims down into the ocean a few feet below the surface one can notice the difference, there is increased pressure on the eardrum, this is due to an increase in hydrostatic pressure.
