Introduction
Amino acids are biomolecules that have an amino group and a carboxyl group attached to the same carbon( the alpha carbon). Amino acids differ from each other in the side group that is attached to the alpha carbon.
Amino acids can be classified into different groups based on the chemical properties of the side groups:
- Non-polar amino acids: The side groups are non-polar and hydrophobic. The side groups do not ionize at all.
- Aromatic amino acids: The side chains have an aromatic group. The side groups don't ionize at normal pH, except for tyrosine.
- Polar uncharged amino acids: The side groups are hydrophilic because they have a functional group that forms a hydrogen bond with water. The side group doesn't ionize under normal conditions.
- Polar charged: their side chain exists as cation or anion at ordinary pH
- positively charged: the side chain is positively charged at pH 7.0
- negatively charged the side chain has a negative charge at pH 7.0.
