The stages of change model has five stages that explain an individual's state of mind while initiating or undergoing change. These happen to be:
1. Pre-contemplation- This is the stage in which people do not realize and accept that there exists a problem behavior in need of change. A tendency to defend the existing pattern of maladaptive behavior is present.
2. Contemplation- This is the stage in which people realize their problem behavior, and accept it, but lack the confidence or the initiative to change it.
3. Preparation- This is the stage in which the person is determined to change the behavior causing problems and is motivated for doing the same.
4. Action- This is the step of executing the willpower to change the problem behavior using various techniques for the same.
5. Maintenance- This is the last stage in which a person resists the tendency to fall back to their bad habits and instead tries to sustain the change implemented in behavior.
