**Question 3:**

A bowl contains 5 red and 5 blue balls. You are to randomly pick 2 balls from this bowl without replacement (meaning a picked ball is not returned to the bowl).

a. What is the probability of picking a red ball on the first pick?

b. Now suppose the first ball picked is red. What is the probability that the second ball picked will be red?

c. What is the probability that both the first and second balls picked are red?

Expert Solution
Step 1

NOTE: I will be using Combinations to solve these problems.

a).Probability is defined as:
Probability=Number of favorable outcomesTotal number of possible outcomes

The formula for combination is:

Crn=n!r!*(n-r)!

We have 5 red and 5 blue balls. Out of them, 2 are selected without replacement.
In this case, we need to find the probability that first pick is red.

For the favorable outcomes, We have 5 balls and 1 is selected.
Hence favorable outcomes=C15

For the total possible outcomes, we have 10 balls and 1 is selected. Hence favorable outcomes=C101
Hence, the required probability is calculated as:
Probabailty=C51C101                     =510                       =0.5

Therefore, the probability of picking a red ball on the first pick is 0.5.
