Outline the anatomical and histological characteristics
of the stomach
The stomach is an important part of gastro intestinal tract which lies between the oesophagus and duodenum.
The main function of the stomach is to break the food into smaller particles and mix the food with gastric acids.
The stomach also perform these roles due to the layers of stomach.
There are 4 layers of stomach:
MUCOSA : Inner layer composed of the epithelial tissue. It lines the inside of the stomach as surface mucous cells and has tiny invaginations called gastric pits which connects stomach to various glands
SUB MUCOSA : This layer is made up of Connective tissue known as gastric mucosa which is responsible for providing blood and nutrients to mucosa in order to survive.
MUSCULARIS LAYER : It is made up of 3 layers of smooth muscle tissue: inner oblique, middle circular and outer longitudinal.which are responsible for slow contracting movements of the stomach required for churning of the food.
SEROSA : The outermost layer surrounding the stomach made of squamous epithelium called mesothelium. It lubricates the wall of stomach and ensure smooth movement of abdominal cavity.
