Features of Digestive system :
1. One of the most important feature of digestive system is peristalsis. Peristalsis is a sequence of involuntary muscular twitches that resemble waves and propel food through the digestive system. Food is moved through the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, and rectum by the wave-like contractions of the smooth muscles in the digestive tract.
2. Two types of digestion occurs in our digestive system. These are mechanical digestion and chemical digestion. Mechanical digestion helps to break large pieces of food into smaller ones. It includes grinding(by teeth), churning(by stomach), segmentation (by intestine). Chemical digestion involves various enzymes of the digestive system which breaks large macromolecules into simpler absorable form.
3. pH of different regions of the digestive system is different. In the mouth and esophagua, pH is slightly alkaline. pH is strongly acidic in the stomach due to HCl. Again, pH becomes alkaline in the small intestine.
