Summarize the functions of the stomach.
Stomach is a dilated part of the alimentary canal between the oesophagus and the small intestine. It is a muscular arc like a J-shaped organ. Stomach is divided into 4 regions: Cardia (opening of oesophagus into the stomach), fundus (area above the cardiac office), body of stomach (largest region of the stomach). The pyloric part leads to the distal end of the stomach, which opens into the small intestine. The 2 layers of peritoneum attached to the stomach are: lesser omentum (attaches the liver to the lesser curvature) and greater omentum (attaches the greater curvature to the posterior body wall). The blood supply is provided by the left gastric artery and the splenic artery.
