Expert Solution
Step 1: Resonance

Resonance:-

  • The different structure of a compound divided by different methods of pairing electrons in a fixed atomic skeleton is called resonance of cannonical structures.
  • The actual structure of the compound is then combination of these structures and hence the compound is called resonance hybride.
  • A hybrid is more stable than any one of the contributing structures.
  • The contributing resonance structures are shown by double headed arrows.
  • Resonating structures are imaginary hypothetical while resonance hybrids is true structure.
  • Resonance involves the delocalization of lone pairs and pi electrons.
  • Resonance must follow Lewis octet rule that is C atom never pentavalent and O atom never tetravalent.
  • In the resonating structure arrangement of atoms remains same there should be difference only in relative arrangement of electrons.
