A wide variety of methods can be used for training employees at all levels. The following is a list of the
various methods.
On-the-Job Methods
On the Job (OJT)– trainee performs work while under the guidance of an experienced employee
Job Shadow- unstructured- trainee observes how to do the job, employee explains to the trainee
what he or she is doing, trainee attempts to do job
Job Instruction training (JIT)- good for jobs with a logical sequence of steps. Steps are often
written down and an experienced employee demonstrates how to do the job through a
formalized, structured and systematic approach
Performance Aid- a device that helps an employee do his/her job- written instructions that
trainee follows on own
Job Rotation- trainee is trained on a number of jobs of a similar skill level by rotating from one
to the next over a period of weeks or months
Coaching- experienced employee provides feedback and reinforcement- works closely with
trainee to improve work performance
Special Projects or Tasks- employee has the opportunity to perform in a new experience within
the organization
Informal learning- learning through interaction with others
