Question

nucleus funtion in plants and animals

Expert Solution
Step 1

In eukaryotic cells, a large organelle known as the nucleus is found. It is a double membrane-bound structure. Inside the nucleus the genetic material is stored. Other organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplast also contain a small amount of od DNA but the majority of DNA is stored in the nucleus.

The cell nucleus is a double membranous structure. These membranes form the nuclear envelope and help to separate the cytoplasm and the nucleoplasm. Nuclear membranes have pores to facilitate the movement of molecules across the nuclear membrane. The inner membrane is intact whereas the outer membrane is continuous with another cell organelle known as endoplasmic reticulum that helps in the synthesis of proteins and lipids.

Inside a nuclease a region of high activity is present where the biosynthesis if ribosomal units take place. This region is known as the nucleolus.

Step 2

The function of the animal cell nucleus

Some of the animal cells are multi-nucleated (skeletal muscle cells) some may not be having any nucleus (RBCs). The animal cell nucleus contains the genetic information in the for nod DNA. It is spherical in shape and occupies a large space within the cell. The animal DNA is packed inside the cell in the form of chromatin but at the time of cell division it arranges in the more condensed form known as chromosomes and replicates and divides to form new daughter cells. It carries out the transcription of gene sequences located on the DNA into mRNA which is transported into the cytoplasm through the nuclear pores and is allowed to perform the synthesis of proteins with the help of ribosomes.

The main activity of the nucleus is to carry forward the process of gene regulation.
