Name the methods employed in animal breeding. According to you which
of the methods is best? Why?
Animal breeding is the procedure of careful mating of animals with the desirable genetic traits. It is performed to enhance or maintain these genetic traits in the future generations. Animal breeding is performed between the same species and breed of animals or different breeds of the same animal species.
Animal breeding methods can be divided into two categories; natural methods and artificial or controlled breeding methods.
1. Natural method of animal breeding: This method includes inbreeding and out breeding of animals. Inbreeding is the process of breeding between the animals of same breed, whereas outbreeding is the process of breeding between the animals of different breeds. Outbreeding is of three types:
- Outcrossing: In this process mating occurs between the same breed of animals with no common ancestor up to last 4-6 generations. The progenies produced in this way is referred as outcross.
- Cross breeding: In this process mating occurs between the different breeds of the same animal species. This process produces hybrid animals.
- Interspecific hybridization: In this process mating occurs between the animals of different species.
