Throughout this chapter, we have discussed the discriminatory policies faced by non-white students. From segregation, to tracking, and curriculums focused on assimilation, non-whites have historically struggled to find their place and opportunities in the American educational system. That being said, postsecondary institutions such as Historic Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have provided a safe learning environment for African American students and students from different races and ethnicities. HBCUs provide academic instruction that focuses on inclusion and sharing the stories and contributions of racial and ethnic minorities.
